The Future's Bright, The Future's Retro

Day follows night – or at least it does once you have left the Velvet Underground of Studenthood, where night has been known to follow night.

And in the same way, the deluge of glossy R’n’B of the early 00s turned into the Return of Britpop (But Different) that is blaring out of the charts now.

It’s like Britain collectively woke up one morning, sat up in bed and said:

“No more smoove grooves, please. We want guitars back. Or at least some good old angst & irony.”

And then there was light, and then there was Coldplay (angst) and then there was Franz Ferdinand (irony) and Cold-Weather Primates and whatnot.

Yay.

What’s the Next Thing, though? Perhaps we will bolt out of bed one of these mornings and go:

“Bring back grunge!”

Goaties and a beanie hat - coming soon to a teenager near you.

Er, from what I can tell, goatees and beanies are still de rigeur for teenagers. It's weird seeing kids wearing Nirvana hoodies who weren't even born when Cobain and co first hit the scene...

Yup, a bit like myself and my odd Jimi Hendrix-phase.

And did I mention Janis Joplin?

I, for one, would prefer a grunge comeback to the incessant guitar 'dull-as-shit-because-they're-all-the-same' bands.

I recently did a funk version of In Bloom at a gig. Which actually worked. A one woman grunge revival in jazz funk style, it was.

Just have to pass by and tell everybody that grunge is back, if it ever was truly gone. Have heard a couple of new bands the last months who have a distinct likelyness to that-band-who-sounded-like-pearl-jam-goes-nirvana. But they are not, they are new and not-so-fresh, I suppose.

One-woman grunge revival jazz-funk-style sounds great! You'll give Kathryn Williams with her All Apologies version a run for her money, I bet, Léonie.

So... grunge is truly back then? Time to go and smash some large vegetables in joy :-)

terrific!, I'm moving to London, I look sooo good in a goatee.

In the states I believe we're having simultaneous revivals of the worst mindless pop of the 70s 80s and 90s and all the worst fashion of those decades to go with it.

And then there is the "punk revival" that has taken everything "punk" out of the punk rock and left it more like candy pop than candy pop ever was. This shit is all like lawrence Welk with electric guitars.

The only thing novel that american youth culture has produced lately is Mindless Self Indulgence

And listening to MSI just makes me feel old....
